National Convention Tour 2012 - Adelaide - South Australia

National Convention Tour

South Australia has showcased our state in two different and exciting tours for Wednesday September 26th. No matter what your interests are, one of the following tours will suit you.

Tour #1

Showcases two distinctly different areas of the Adelaide Hills. The first area is where the
Scottish Heritage dominates the buildings and the second area is distinctly German in atmosphere and buildings. Against these two cultural backgrounds we visit a textile artist, antique and thrift shops then move to exploring a street of artisan and tourist shops and experience one of the world’s top 10 chocolate and wine experiences at a boutique winery.

The tour wends its way through the southern suburbs past a reservoir until we reach Kangarilla and visit Sonya Hasselberg-Johnson’s wonderful weaving studio Her work is done in silks and fine merino wool. She creates fabrics which pleat, pucker, wrinkle, crinkle, into unique patterns based on new personal techniques. Visit her website to see some of her work. Just the place to buy a very special something for that very special person.

We then move on to the heart of the Scottish Heritage country, Strathalbyn, which means Valley of the Scots, settled by William Rankine in 1842. The original house is no a National Trust registered house. Strathalbyn is the heart of antique shop country, with its Antique festival held each August. We will spend time here allowing time to visit a quilt fabric shop, thrift shops and to wander. We will have lunch on the banks of the Angas River before travelling through the beautiful Adelaide Hills to Hahndorf.

Hahndorf is one of the early settlements of German immigrants and is the home of Beerenberg jams and preserves. Here we will have time to wander the very German main street with its whitewashed walls and black beam walls. For those who wish to, there will be the opportunity to experience one of the world’s best chocolate and wine tasting experiences at Hahndorf Hill winery:- www.hahndorfhillwinery.com.au - then go to Chocovino. Follow further links to CNN where they list 10 of the world’s top chocolate adventures. Hahndorf is also the place to buy a very special item for yourself or for someone special.

If time, on our way home we may visit a Fabric shop for those who are suffering withdrawal symptoms.

Tour #2

This tour has been designed for those who wish to explore some of Adelaide’s hidden treasures in fabric shopping. Shops could include a leather wholesaler www.dshorne.com.au , a neighbourhood shop www.melanns.com and www.melannsallthingsquilting.com.au , a new quilting shop, a charity warehouse which is well known for its range of low priced, top value fabrics, a fabric emporium with two floors of materials ranging from wedding and evening materials, to curtain and upholstery materials and does not forget the everyday garments for women, men, children and babies. www.dkfabrics.com and www.weddingsa.com/dkfabrics/default.htm  Lots of haberdashery and patterns make this a
complete shopping experience. Before returning to the college we hope to visit a silk treasure trove. www.easternsilk.com.au

Leave plenty of room in your luggage for specials if you decide on this trip.
