Suzanne Gray

Suzanne’s formal training in Visual Arts equipped her for a teaching career which has spanned 33 years.  Her passion and enthusiasm for sewing began in the early 70’s, and has grown ever since.

In1986 she attended her first patchwork class and has since gone on to design and produce her own patterns under the business name of Hooley Dooley Artworks.  Suzanne has also published two books based on appliqué,

She runs classes and workshops from her charming garden studio at Wamberal, NSW having taught Visual Arts for 20 years.  As a qualified Palmer/Pletsch teacher, Suzanne specialises in pattern fit and helping students create something unique, whilst she enjoys sharing her knowledge and love of sewing

At the 2011 Convention in Launceston, Suzanne’s workshops were very popular with her students.  They were thrilled with the outcome of their creations.  We should also point out that Suzanne’ garments in the “Recycle, Rethink, Remake” challenge won three awards – Day Wear, Special Occasion Wear and Voters’ Choice.  The Special Occasion Wear was one of her fractured knits cardi, with an interesting story.

SG1FKC2 Fractured Knits

Monday 29/09/2014 8:45am-4:45pm
Tuesday 30/09/2014 8:45am-4:45pm

How many of us when buying fabric have bought that extra half a metre “just in case we need it” only to  find that the pattern requirements were right after all and so the leftovers go into the stash until we have a big clean out and they get thrown away. This workshop will show you how to use up all those scraps and help you do your bit for the environment, by reducing landfill. I will help you look for processes and techniques that reuse, recycle and sustain and at the same time produce a garment that is dramatic, unique and creative and has that “Wow” factor.

Using a basic cardigan pattern learn how to create many different looks using colour blocking with scraps of knit fabric from your stash as well as embellishments and trims. Learn many useful hints and tips from basic knit sewing to more advanced techniques e.g. applying a zipper, fold-over elastic, buttonholes and creating your own trims. Garments made of knit fabrics are the ultimate in comfort, easy to launder and are fun, fast and easy to construct once you know the basics. Create a unique, fun and fashionable cardi that will gain positive comments whenever you wear it.

Student Requirements
  • Kwik Sew pattern 2759 or 2948 or 3766 or 2900.
  • 2mts tracing paper or non iron-on Vilene for tracing off your pattern (never cut up the master sheet in Kwik Sew patterns).
  • Approximately 1-2mts of a two way stretch knit fabric in a base colour that you like.
  • A selection of coordinating knit fabric scraps (again two way stretch) from your stash e.g. 60cm will give you a sleeve, 30cm a yoke etc.
  • I love using striped knit fabrics for trims but remember if you wish to put it down the front of your cardigan you will need your length as most stripes run across the width of the fabric.
  •
  • Good quality machine sewing thread.
  • “Woolly Nylon” thread to be used in the bobbin.
  • Stretch sewing machine needles.
  • 60cm light weight open ended zipper for a sample.
  • Buttons or press studs.
  • Laces, braids, ribbons, extra buttons and anything you wish to add to your cardigan to embellish.
  • Sewing machine and basic supplies (an edge foot is essential)
