Sew-Alongs

Zippers, Facings & Waistbands

This Sew-Along is all about techniques.  You won't be making any garments; instead you will build a portfolio of samples to keep as a handy reference when you're ready to tackle the real thing.

Some techniques are su9ited to beginners, while others are more advanced.  You're free to pick and choose which ones you'd like to try.  If you are new to sewing, begin with the basic techniques.  As your skills and confidence grow, you can progress to the intermediate and advanced techniques.

Insert a lapped zipper by hand (Beginner) - This lesson covers:

  • inserting a zipper in a skirt or pants that will be finished with a waistband
  • inserting a zipper in the back seam of a dress or a top that has a neckline facing

Insert a lapped zipper by hand (Intermediate) - This lesson covers:

  • inserting a zipper in a skirt or pants that will be finished with a waistband
  • inserting a zipper in the back seam of a dress or a top that has a neckline facing
  • how to pick stitch, including adding beads for a special-occasion garment

Invisibly stitched zipper (Advanced) - Learn the couture method for inserting a normal zipper without any visible stitching

Insert an invisible zipper (Beginner) - A fool-proof method which eliminates unsightly puckers or bumps at the end of the zipper.  Plus bonus instructions for attaching a neckline facing with a professional finish.

Insert an exposed zipper (Intermediate) - The entire zipper is stiched on the right side of the garment.  Learn two different methods.

Sew a mock fly front (Beginner) - This method skips the zipper guard, making it quicker and easier than a traditional fly.  It also results in fewer layers of fabric across the tummy area for a smoother finish.

Sew a fly front with zipper guard (Intermediate) - This is the conventional method and includes more pieces and more steps.

Couture fly front (Advanced) - This method involves more hand sewing and therefore greater control.

All-in-one facing (Intermediate/Advanced) - Replace separate neckline and armhole facings with an all-in-one facing for a cleaner, more professional finish on sleeveless garments.  You'll learn how to draft the facing and explore two different attachment methods.

Expanding waistband (Intermediate) - Transform an ordinary waistband pattern into an expanding one without losing the professional look of a tailored band.

Draft a contoured waistband (Intermediate) - Replace a straight waistband with one that curves to better fit your waist.

Couture waistband (Advanced) - Create a flexible, comfortable waistband using the couture method.
